During 8th grade, students will learn about the foundations of the United States, just how the government works, the westward growth of the US, why to US went to the Civil War, and how the country rebuilt afterward.
Major topics include the early colonies and the Revolutionary war. Students explore the Constitution, Bill of Rights, and early presidents. The concept of the 3 branches of government and the balance of powers is introduced. The War of 1812 in studied. Students look at the reasons Americans moved west along with the benefits and disadvantages of doing so. Finally, students look at the issues that drove the use to split in half during the Civil War and what happened as a result.
Through all the units, students will make connections between history and life today.
